BOB’S HOLIDAY OFFICE PARTY
Now in its ninth year, Rob Elk and Joe Keyes’ seasonal
satire on corporate greed, small-town values and alcohol
abuse once again delivers a gut-busting good time. With
Neuterberg, Iowa’s already sagging local economy
threatened by the potential arrival of megastore Barnmart,
struggling insurance agent Bob Finhead (Elk) is enticed
by a wealthy former Neuterbergian (Pat O’Brien)
to sell his business, leave town and fulfill his dream
of becoming an inventor. “Change is not good,”
decries Bob’s childhood friend and town sheriff,
Joe (Keyes), who endeavors to “kill that dream once
and for all” since it means Bob must leave his loyal
— if alcoholic and accident-prone — collection
of clients, of which Sheriff Joe is a charter member.
Director Justin Tanner’s comic timing is in full
and furious display as he choreographs the astute ensemble
through Bob’s slovenly Friday night beer bust, while
puncturing Red State “moral values.” Special
praise goes to Ann Randolph for her hilarious dual role
as twin sisters Carol, a preacher’s wife, and Brandy,
a drunken floozy, as well as Linda Miller and Maile Flanagan
as the farming Johnson twins. Third Stage, 2811 W. Magnolia
Blvd., Burbank; Thurs.-Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun. 7 p.m.; thru
Dec. 19. (818) 842-4755. |
